First Degree Murder For Mathews Slayer Verdict
John Wahnstreet was found guilty of murder in the first degree without capital punishment by a jury in Hagerstown after about an hour and a half of deliberation. He slashed the throat of Harry Matthews in a Cumberland Front street saloon last October. The trial was moved to Washington county. State's Attorney Roman and O. T. Kaylor prosecuted, while George Lewis Eppler and David A. Robb defended. The verdict followed a new state act allowing juries to decide on capital punishment.

Funeral of Mrs. Miller Holds Grief Stricken Service
The body of Mrs. Harry Miller, who died by suicide at New Germany, was brought to Grantsville for a large, sorrowful burial. Rev. E. E. Oney and Rev. Price led the Lutheran service with mental derangement noted as a probable cause. She left three children and a husband, plus parents and siblings in Jennings. A Thanksgiving reunion in the Lutheran Church followed, with local visitors from Frostburg. The Frostburg Fire Department held its quarterly meeting at City Hall with a full room. Officials reported solid progress and a plan to raise about six hundred dollars for new two inch hose while pushing for thirteen hundred more to fund a La France truck costing thirty seven hundred dollars. a January council appeal is planned.

Hospital notes report Charles House aged 9 of Lonaconing with a broken thigh sustained while at play. Mrs. Lillian Geady and Mrs. Walter Hoffman of Mt Savage along with Mrs. George Brode of the city left the hospital. Andy Lipsick, badly injured by a dynamite cap, is recovering well though missing an eye and several fingers. Valentine Sides shows improvement. Miss Loubelle Neal is recovering after an operation. William Anderson of Allegany underwent surgery. Current count: 15 patients remain in the hospital.

Pneumonia Claims Child in Park Avenue Home
Two year old Harry Carter died at the family house on Park Avenue Monday evening from pneumonia. The child and parents had recently returned from a visit to Mrs. Carter's parents in Thomas, West Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh S. Brady of Wheeling were guests of Mrs. L. T. DeWitt on Frost Avenue Sunday. Mrs. Brady was formerly Miss Francis Sloan of Cumberland.
