Beall High Adds Engineering Department for Vocational Training

Prof O R Rice and County Supt Edward F Webb establish a new engineering department at Beall High School with field work at Consolidation Coal Company mines and power plants. Prof Francis E Pray will lead courses in Trigonometry Crafting and Science as Applied to Mining Engineering to prepare boys for engineering roles in mining areas. Interior renovations and painting are underway as the school readies for term starting September 5.

Fortieth-Seventh Shenandoah Valley Fair in Winchester

The Forty-Seventh Annual Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Society fair runs September 11 to 16 in Winchester Virginia. Racing purses total 3000 dollars with stalls expected to fill. Daily motorcycle racing on an improved track, 4000 entries booked including livestock fruit vegetables and home products. The Girl's Canning Club of Clarke County will exhibit in the main building. The Panama Pacific Exposition Shows led by Frank Melville of New York will provide attractions throughout the week. Everyone is invited to enter stock and attend this popular event in the Shenandoah Valley.

Forty years ago in Cumberland Daily News frostburg readers learn J. W. S. Cochrane confirmed as Frostburg schools principal. A Pompey Smash gang entered Old Clary Tavern Clarysville and after rough handling of proprietor George Endler destroyed fixtures and robbed cash.

Maryland Bars Reuse of Soda Containers After September

The State Board of Health will strictly enforce a rule from September 1 requiring single use paper cups at soda fountains in Maryland to prevent infantile paralysis. Reuse or cross use of glasses will bring fines up to 500 dollars. A pair of travel orders effective August 26 tightens entry and exit for children under 16 from states with outbreaks, mandating health service permits, fourteen day home quarantine, and residency requirements for state-to-state travel. Under 16s returning from epidemic areas need a public health permit, with quarantine observed for two weeks, and permits to travel to outbreak states limited to permanent residence intentions. Maryland residents working out of state may travel under weekly renewed permits. visits for instruction or recreation are prohibited.

Barn Burned On Livengood Farm In Maryland Lightning Strikes

A large barn on Elijah Livengood’s farm between Salisbury and Grantsville was struck by lightning at 11 o’clock Tuesday night. Three horses, 200 tons of hay, and considerable farm machinery were destroyed, with the blaze visible as far as Frostburg.

Mr Roberdeau Annan, president of the First National Bank, caught a four and a half pound black bass in the South Branch last Saturday. This is not a new feat for Mr Annan as he has previously caught several large fish in past seasons.

Frostburg women led by Mrs H V Hesse and Miss Marion DeWitt plan a meeting at the Gladstone Hotel at 7:30 PM to boost the County Lawn Fete at The Dingle near Cumberland on Thursday September 7. Virginia Fugitive Arrested In Mine Town Case

Fennel Morris aged 49 was arrested last Friday by Sheriff D E Crousehorn of Harrisonburg Virginia and returned to the state to face charges for shooting his brother John Morris in May 1915. Morris had worked in local mines and married Lydia Wilson of Frostburg last October.
