The California Republican state convention favored McKinley aligned measures including protection, reciprocity and silver coinage, with delegates pledged to McKinley in most districts. The Spreckels and Spear factions fought over credentials, primaries, and seating, while the A P A influence surfaced as a significant factor amid aggressive exchanges and procedural battles.
The platform committee proposed four delegates for the national convention and endorsed William McKinley of Ohio for the presidential nomination. A San Francisco member argued the McKinley plank was weak and backed a substitute endorsing California Republicans to pledge the state’s electoral votes to the Republican nominee.
Delegates on first ballot include Spreckels Knight Giant Thaga and others for presidential electors at large. State central committee names list numerous counties and members from Alameda to Yuba with Tuolomne and Trinity omitted. San Jose May 6 30 090 spectators witnessed a magnificent floral procession with a dozen bands marching through streets divided into divisions. Proclamation started after 2 o clock and officials claim it was the grandest ever held in the state. An illustrated concert followed at the pavilion by Rincon ter's band. Streets and buildings were lit with crowds blocking side walks.

The ship reached 12 knots at half speed. builder Henry J. Scott predicted over 16 knots on the official run, with government rewards tied to excess speed. If Oregon beats Indiana's 15.5 knot record, California shipbuilders gain prestige.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed prior rulings by declaring the board of supervisors cannot pay one year’s debts with the revenues of another. Bradford sought to enjoin further municipal demands and block auditor approval. The lower court demurrer was overturned, restoring Bradford’s challenge. The decision bars using current year funds to cover a deficit from a prior year.
