Senate debated opposition to expanding the Monroe doctrine with two contrasting resolutions. In San Francisco a quarrel at Duane's saloon led to Terry stabbing Phillips in the neck. The fight followed a duel taunt. three knife wounds were inflicted but resulted in non fatal injuries. Bystanders stopped the scene. neither man was arrested and Phillips will not press charges.
In Sicrauevto on January 23 a new back levee enclosing lands of Megotwan Cram and McGregor two miles below Washington failed, inundating about 600 acres of river front. Water levels on the Yolo beat last season’s peak, with rainfall 60 percent of normal. Dr. Dixon warns immediate federal and state action is needed to prevent irreparable loss as channel shifts threaten Washington and surrounding lands. Major George F. Robinson retires to Pomona Cal after saving Secretary Seward’s life in 1863 amid an assassination attempt. News also reports Washington treasurer’s gold losses totaling 2,022,000 for the day, reducing reserves to 50,709,129.
In Wasumetox January 21 the Senate set aside finance and foreign affairs to clear the calendar. About seventy bills passed, with only major measures pending. The Cuban question drew brief, inconclusive attention as Mr Call urged release of Americans arrested in Havana, while others warned the move could invite trouble. The body also approved land acts, pensions for several widows, bridge and canal provisions, and river projects, adjourning later in the day.
Wasurveroy January 21 The house approved the urgent deficiency bill totaling 4 415 022 with 3 242 682 earmarked for United States courts. The treasury will resume coinage of silver dollars in February, aiming to coin about 18 million dollars to restore holdings to March 4 1893 levels. Seigniorage on the bullion earned under Sherman act yields about 150 thousand dollars to the treasury. Order for mint coinage at Philadelphia New Orleans and San Francisco expected within days. A separate item reports Eugene Pardine convicted in San Francisco for debauching young girls. sentencing set for Friday.
