Legislature Introduces Constitutional Amendments in California

Sacramento January 10 In a busy session today committees began organizing and five constitutional amendment bills were introduced in the Senate. Proposals include a majority verdict in jury cases taxation of all estated property and district based board of equalization. Assembly proceedings featured numerous referrals and debates on rail and education measures with adjournment at 2:20 pm.

General Butler Dead Suddenly Summoned Home

General Benjamin F. Butler died at his Washington residence at 1 30 AM After years near public life he faced a winter in the capital and died of heart failure His passing came as a surprise to friends and was followed by brief services in Washington and the return train to Lowell Mass President Harrison visited the Butler home to view the body. The Work of a Pend Billy Matthews Examination

Billy Matthews alias Charles Mathews the Australian will be examined at Porterville on Wednesday for a reported incident involving 15 year old Amelia Agmug. She was lured from a hotel by him and assaulted in a vacant lot. Her brother John alerted authorities, and Matthews was captured after a chase ending in Plano. He is bound over on $1000 and awaits trial. In a separate Denver mining accident, a premature explosion at a Union Pacific mine near Como killed most of the twenty eight miners with eleven bodies identified, several missing, as the mine closes pending inspection.

Murphy the Man nominated for Senate in Democratic caucus

In Arpaxy on January 10 the Democratic joint caucus nominated Hon. Edward Murphy Jr of frog for United States Senator. Murphy won 85 of 90 votes as Burke Cochrane trailed, triggering applause and then cheering that ended with the nomination not formally concluded.

Australian prize fighter on trial in Porterville

Billy Matthews alias William E. Smith testified at a closed Porterville hearing denying assault on Amelia Agnus after a December 7 ball. Amelia identified injuries and recounted the attack with Matthews accompanied by clerk Harry H. Davis. Bond set at 1509, Matthews remanded for lack of bonds.

Weather and trains crippled by long running storm

Rough on Passengers. Rough on Passengers, Johnstown Pa January 11. The Worat storm for many years has been aging in the Mountains near Mbensburg. Last night passengers on the Branch train were snowed in west Ebansburg and held all night, the train stalled on a siding. The thermometer was 12 below. The engineer was badly frozen and taken to a farm house in unknown condition. The train was abandoned and passengers were later moved to the main line.
