A series of strong tremors struck San Diego on February 23 at about 11 14 pm lasting nearly a minute. Buildings swayed and chandeliers rattled while people rushed into streets in their night attire. No damage reported.
At the California state convention in San Francisco delegates from Los Angeles and San Diego protested their exclusion from the resolutions committee. The issue led to increasing committee size to 20 per side while a permanent organization formed with Glaescock as chair and a harmony-focused secretary election. Resolutions backed popular U S senators, tariff reform, and restraint on appropriations.
Henry Miller and a dozen Fresno County property owners sue the Madera Irrigation District in superior court to restrain tax enforcement on real estate and stop foreclosure for nonpayment. Thomas E. Hughes and about ninety others file a similar suit in San Francisco.
Sonora February 23. John Trout an assessor and once sheriff of Toolamne county vanished years ago. Last Monday the bleached bones of a missing man were found in a gulch two miles from Sonora. The skeleton leaned against a rock with a revolver two chambers empty a pocket knife and a 2 bit piece nearby. Identification was by a head scar.
Second day of the Trans-Mississippi congress sees resolutions on canal, currency, statehood for New Mexico Arizona Utah, sugar bounty law, immigration stiffening, and land/opening Indian reservations. Also reports say Noble may become France minister, Carter to succeed Noble. Bernhardt cancels engagements due to nervous prostration. Weeks pleads guilty to assault. San Diego reports say W C Collins, president of the California National Bank, was arrested on embezzlement charges after a $200,000 misappropriation. Bail set at $50,000 as stockholders faced fresh losses while receivers discussed the bank’s recovery. In Santa Cruz, John W Jarvis, longtime board chair and vineyard pioneer, died. Cannes coverage notes conflicting testimony on Abeille’s visit amid the tragedy inquiry.
In Albany the Till nomination sparks debate as Springer's view shifts toward excluding ex president. Meantime in Separa a black robber targets Charles and Mrs Taylor, tying Taylor and assaulting Mrs Taylor, with a $1600 reward and possible death by burning if captured.
A joint committee selects Omaha as the site for the Third Party nominating convention on July 4. The call urges voters to meet in late March to ratify principles and organize delegates, with representation from four delegates per congressional district and eight per state, totaling 1776. Collin s arrest for the California National Bank presidency is reported with bail at 50,000 still not posted. Preliminary examination set for next Wednesday as doubts grow about the bank’s cash and deposits before suspension. Banking officials accuse loan associations of being delusions run for officers.
Salton Lake in Tulare and Lots counties is expected to enlarge dramatically due to heavy snowmelt and overflowing rivers. Observers note the desert lake already spans about a half mile wide and could inundate up to 100 miles of Southern Pacific track as floods may swell the desert basin. Damage fears rise as mountains shed snow and waters move toward arid lands.
