Farmers' Organization Notes on Membership Drive
Preliminary meetings for the Steuben County permanent membership drive opened September 23 with the main drive slated to begin October 18. The National Farmers Association cites Clifford Thorne's work before the Interstate Commerce Commission as saving up to 200 million dollars yearly for shippers, with at least half benefiting farmers. 35 states are members, with dues of five dollars or more. Indiana plans county and state federation organization by November first. Political promises place “real dirt farmers” in government roles across departments and commissions. The movement supports the Truth in Fabrics bill, arguing farm interests aid the public. Dr. George Monroe, linked to Mrs. Gene Stratton Porter, was arrested on counterfeit check charges amid divorce proceedings.
