Reading Industrialist Otis Hammel Killed by Freight Engine

Otis Hammel, about 60, proprietor of a Reading saw mill, died Friday after noon when his Ford touring car was struck broadside by a locomotive backing down near the Reading depot. Brakeman Glen Norton of Fort Wayne was injured, and Hammel’s car was demolished. Norton, who jumped clear, was treated in hospital. Hammel had lived in Reading six years after moving from Fremont. He leaves a wife and three children, with one son at DePauw University and daughters in Missouri and New Hampshire.

Revival series opens at Methodist Episcopal Church

A four week revival began Sunday night at the Methodist Episcopal Church with services led by different county ministers. This week is Epworth League hosted Win-My-Chum Week. The final three weeks will be led by Rev. Thomas Penn Ullom of Winona Lake Indiana who is slated to preach Saturday night in Fremont.

The Men's Brotherhood held a Friday evening meeting at the M E church basement to organize Y M C A war work efforts this week. Rev A G Neal of Fort Wayne spoke and several hundred dollars were pledged. Banks will accept donations.

Government Pledges Stable Hog Prices and Production Boost

The Food Administration pledges a minimum hog price of about 15.50 per cwt to stabilize markets and urges a 20 percent increase in brood sows.
