Shingle roofs caused 1,054 fires and 246,044 dollars in losses, about 18 percent. Increase caution on chimneys and roofing could prevent over half of these fires. Bonfires and burning leaves pose additional danger to children and property.
In Washington a Fuel Administration meeting heard Van H Manning of the Bureau of Mines warn that educated coal use could cut annual production by ten percent immediately. He said further savings are possible with instruction and equipment upgrades during the war, while noting the ideal of half as much coal could suffice if the public became skilled users.
