It explains testing soil deposits with muriatic acid to detect carbonate of lime and assess marl purity. The test also applies to limestone, notes S. D. Conner, Chemist in Soils and Crops.
The article describes migration to a healthful Gulf climate, coast surveys near LaParra, dredging from Corpus Christi, and a water route to winter resorts. A simple batter combines flour butter sugar baking powder egg cocoanut and salt with milk to form a stiff dough. Shape small pieces on a greased tin brush with milk top with cocoanut and bake in a hot oven about fifteen minutes.
Shell a half pint of peanuts remove skins and chop fine. Beat four egg whites to stiff froth. Fold in two cups sugar and the peanuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls on oiled paper. Bake moderately until golden brown.
Beat together one quart oysters chopped fine with a half pint drawn butter seasoned with salt and cayenne. Stir in the oysters and boil five minutes. Fill pastry shapes baked in small pie dishes. Bake two more minutes and serve at once.
Melt butter, add a dozen large oysters with oyster liquor. Season with salt and pepper, cook two minutes. Place toast slices on plates, arrange oysters, and ladle enough liquor to moisten.
