A northbound Monon engine exploded near Francesville Indiana, killing the fireman A T McCarthy of Indianapolis and the head brakeman H Buck who died an hour later. Engineer Don Cavanaugh was badly burned but survived. A nearby farmer was injured as debris tore through a wagon. The incident follows broader dispatches about crude oil replacing natural gas and a planned bipartisan congressional visit to the Hawaiian Islands to counter foreign influence on commerce.

Water Struck Deep in Desert Well at Walters Cal

The Southern Pacific company bored into Walters California in the Colorado desert and struck water at 83 feet.
