Young man drowns in Lake James during outing

Edward Huber, 27, Wells Fargo Express agent from Fort Wayne, drowned Sunday at Lake James during a cottage outing with friends. He could not swim and despite grappling attempts by boat and dynamite search, the body was not recovered by Monday. He was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs George Hiber of Fort Wayne.

Mark Miller Killed Cutting Wheat in Pleasant Township

Mark Miller, 62, a farmer near Crooked Lake in Pleasant township, died last Saturday forenoon when three horses pulling a binder startled after he oils the machine. He was caught by the cutter bar, sustaining fatal injuries. his son witnessed the death. He leaves a wife and two children.

Steuben county conscription board protested a 131 man quota after 29 National Guard and 11 regulars were credited. An investigation found 89 county residents in National Guard were uncounted, prompting a push to adjust the quota and seek justice from state officials.

Grain Dealers and Farmers to Meet in Angola Aug 3

Grain dealers and millers of Steuben county plan a meeting in the Angola library assembly room on Friday evening August 3 at 8 00. H H Dean former president of the Indiana Grain Dealers Association will explain the federal grain standards. Six wheat meetings will be held in the county next week led by R L Thompson to discuss wheat production and fertilization demonstrations.
