Corporal John Hartwell of Company C, 25th Infantry, was shot and killed in the Fort Buford barracks while watching a pool game. Private Basel Williams seized a rifle and fired, piercing Hartwell’s heart. Williams was restrained and Capt. Charles T. Robeilliams ordered him to the guard house. No motive is known.
The week was cooler than usual and generally favorable for farm work in the Atlantic coast spring wheat region and the Pacific coast and Ohio Valley. Rainfall slightly excessive in Kansas Eastern Nebraska Western Iowa and Northwestern Missouri. Cotton planting progressing rapidly nearly completed in Southern Texas. Telegrams indicate improved conditions throughout the central valley with favorable weather and ground ready for plowing.
Washington officials both civil and military monitor Coxey Army arrivals as commonweal grows. Detachments from cities are being authenticated, posing a problem for district authorities after disbanding. Coxey has not planned to lead the men out, leaving stranded individuals in the city.
A powerful blast in Los Angeles Cal shattered three brick storefronts at the northwest corner of Spring and Fifth streets. A restaurant a cigar factory and a Japanese curio shop were wiped out with no injuries reported. Loss estimated around 85000.
The smallpox situation in Chicago grows dire with ten new cases at the County Hospital and hundreds exposed. A strict quarantine blocks admissions and discharges to curb spread as the pest remains heavily present with 178 patients in the facility.
A boiler in Georgze Shipley’s saw mill in northeast Whitley County Indiana exploded, killing fireman Ami Hively and injuring Shipley and his son. The mill was wrecked and a four pound boiler fragment was hurled about sixty rods. Hively leaves a wife and one child.
A sensational shooting occurred at the law office of ex Attorney General Miller in Indianapolis. W J Copeland of Madison shot Addison Harris, injuring his arm, and also shot W H Bruning of Madison in the face.

A River Side School roof collapse in Point St Carlos Ontario killed three children with several injuries. The quorum-counting rule passed 212 to 4, Republicans in support.

A Texas farm hand kills employer and relatives in Colesburg. A bank heist yields $2,500 at Chadron, Nebraska, with the president locked in a vault. A brutal murder spree includes a statement by Frank Crews in Collinburg. Theomakes headlines range from train wrecks to police cases and a deadly schoolyard stabbing in Cincinnati. Multiple arrests and confessions populate the docket across states.
Twenty four harges valued at 5000 and furniture at 4000 burned during a blaze at a barn and storage house on Pearson street in Chicago. In Buffalo, Americano Glucose Company plant destroyed with losses near 1,000,000 and insurance about 185,000. Twelve workers reportedly cremated. In Cincinnati the Rayres Scoville carrying factory burned for about 15,000 with no loss of life. A separate incident in Jeffersonville saw a negro set fire to the Ferguson residence and grocery.
A fragmentary report notes a man awakened, a negro left, and Mr. Ferguson rescuing his family from flames. It mentions at Minneapolis the First Regiment Armory sustaining about $30,000 in incendiary fire damage.
