Nurserymen Fruit and Garden Competitions Awards

The committee awarded Luman Montague Best and Greatest Variety Apples with $5.00, and Best six Varieties Winter Apples and Seedling Apples with $3.00 and $2.00 respectively. Garden vegetables awards list numerous growers including H. Smallwood, G. H. Warren, C. F. Taggart, and J. H. Warren among others, with premiums ranging from 25 to 100. Several entries were rejected for insufficient quantity, while other classes cover dairy, home-made implements, and foreign implements with numerous exhibitors profiled.

The crowd heard sharp hits on Douglasites and Know Nothing records as Jackson defended accuracy and truth. Strackey Known for Know Nothing Ties as Douglas Candidate

Fred A Strackey, the Douglas County candidate for Senator in this district, helped found a Know Nothing lodge in Galena and later served as a regular member. He was elected Mayor of Galena by lodge allies and unsuspecting Germans, who did not know of his membership.
