Kansas Free State? Debating Sovereignty and a Constitutional Convention

A Kansas Territory letter argues for popular sovereignty and declares Kansas a Free State despite strong anti slavery forces. It praises the Constitutional Convention now in session, notes the election of Col. J. J. Lane as president and officers, and contrasts votes for Whitfield and Reeder, with districts along the Missouri River and Indian reserves shaping turnout. The writer expects Kansas to cast off slavery and establish liberty and justice.
