Letter From Kansas Describes Crops and Prosperity
A Freeport Republican correspondent in Fort Scott Kansas dated June 16 1882 reports mild spring weather ending sleet and wind with sunny days. Wheat harvest begins with yields of 25 to 30 plus bushels per acre in parts and 16 to 18 in others. Varieties like Malze and Lancaster Mediterranean are favored. Becker notes wheat 25 to 35 bushels per acre, oats slightly behind, corn growing well, fruit abundant, and cattle and sheep grazing on green pastures along a new road showing southeastern Kansas as promising for grasses and stock. The writer’s town of 700, mostly colored residents, sits on a rocky high point with surface fields nearby.
