The Rushing Bore At Monckton New Brunswick

The Bay of Fundy tides produce a dramatic bore observed near Monckton New Brunswick as a three foot wall of water sweeping upstream to rush six feet deeper inland. Bores occur along Minas Basin with heights up to eight feet and speeds near fifteen miles an hour, sometimes drowning cattle wrecking vessels and tossing boats, while birds and curlews follow the white foam. The bore is explained by rival theories of swift tidal rush and rapid rise in shallow bottoms, with harmonizing imagery of a dashed pail over a smooth floor to illustrate the phenomenon.
