The Jennie Hight Troupe begins a six nights engagement at the Opera House on Monday. Tuesday presents Won at Last with Miss Jennie Hight as Constance Warburton followed by The Quiet Family. Prof Robinson’s band provides music as Miss Hight’s engagement is eagerly supported. Monday’s show pleased all with Meg’s Diversion performance.
The Stephenson County Guards presented The Drummer Boy to a large, appreciative audience closing on Saturday. W H Anderson as Mart Howard and Master T F Miller as the Drummer Boy led a strong home cast including G W Crowden Uncle Joe F R Pettit as Fattie Smith Frank Taggart as Farmer Howard and R M Buckman as Frank Rutledge. Miss Katie Preston as Jennie Howard sang The Vacant Chair to applause. A levee at Brewster House followed the show.
The Academic Department of Freeport College will start September 30 in the late residence of Hon. J. W. Shaffer. Teachers are engaged and modern furniture will be used. The school promises pleasant accommodations and a likely large attendance. Circulars with details will be ready for distribution Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

On October 1, stamp duties on all business papers and legal documents excluding bank checks will be removed. Contracts affidavits bills receipts notes conveyances policies warrants writs warranty deeds mortgages power of attorney and similar documents will be free from this restriction.
In circuit court last week William P Emmert sued Hanover Fire Insurance and Home Insurance Company of Columbus Ohio winning verdicts for the full policy amounts. Loss from the winter fire was between 7000 and 8000 dollars while insurance totaled 4000 dollars. Remaining cases to proceed next term with Bailey Neff for plaintiff Crain for defendants.
Oliver W. Brewster, born October 25 1791 in Blanford Massachusetts, died at home on the 20th. A veteran of the War of 1812, he moved from Chatham New York to Onondaga Cortland Oneco Stephenson Freeport. He founded Cortland Female Seminary and served as Sheriff and county official. A devoted Presbyterian elder and longtime president of the County Bible Society, he dies with an unblemished Christian record and was buried after a funeral at First Presbyterian Church.
A Rockford Gazette report highlights J. F. Dawson of Freeport as the fair’s leading contributor with about nine hundred mounted specimens. The assortment includes birds, mammals, and a ichthyological display with twenty specimens, plus insects from Master Frank Kimball.
The piece cites an immense moving mass of 8 000 to 10 000 at a Democratic procession last week and a forty to fifty thousand crowd at a Guards display Friday and Saturday. He plans Boston travel then New York, aiming to boost October sales fivefold.

Gen D. Atkins will speak in Lancaster at Pleasant View School House on Saturday September 28 1872. The Grant and Wilson Club will be organized by officer election at the meeting, to discuss the political issues of the day. A long list of local residents sign on to form the club and invite all to attend. The note ends with a digressive commentary on Greeley and O Connor, praising enterprise.
Davis Gazette reports Davis County Fair at Freeport scheduled for next Tue through Fri with attractions doubled from prior years. Train fare to Freeport is 60 cents round trip during fair week. Also notes a post office money order schedule for Germany and local business changes including Mr Whittlesey selling lumber yard to Mr Phelps.
In Chicago market notes for September, No 2 spring wheat closed at a steady price, corn traded around 85 85 1/8 cents per bushel, oats and barley showed firmer bids, and lard traded near 9 cents per pound as buyers and sellers adjusted on cash basis.
