Chicago political squabbles shake party in 1868
From Chicago dated September 16 1868 a special correspondent reports a rift in the Republican ranks as General Julius White vs Norman T Gassette for Clerk of the Circuit Court dominates local primaries. Gassette unexpectedly secures the nomination while White withdraws. The Tribune laments, the city’s trades unions form a rival ticket which is repudiated by many unions. Knights Templar hosts Wisconsin visitors en route to St Louis for a grand encampment. A lavish update promotes Chicago’s Brunswick billiard hall as a landmark, while sensational local gossip and betting on Grant circulate amid political sotto voce.
