Abraham Kinlay offers auction on Wednesday September 13 1871 at his Loran town residence one mile south of Waterman's mill adjoining Ralph Sabiri's farm. Items include horses and harness wagons cows calves two double drags farming implements corn hay a Singer sewing machine and other articles. Terms: under five dollars cash over five dollars one year with note and approved security. H M Time, Auctioneer.
Adopted by Lena Lodge 174 A F and A M at a regular meeting on Wednesday evening last. E H Shumway, aged veteran Mason, entered apprentice in 1811. Committee reports praise his piety, integrity, patriotism, and support of Bible Christianity. Resolutions publish in Lena Star and papers, with copy to his family. Lena, Illinois August 30, 1871.

A call to attend Horace Greeley’s lecture at the Pera House on Monday evening September 25. The notice urges every man to go and bring a lady, and if unable to bring one, to bring two.
In urging broad support for the newspaper, the writer argues it rivals churches and schools in influence, reaching ten times the audience of ministers. It can teach all, lift spirits, and deserve liberal backing as a representative of our collective welfare, open on every table and in nearly every home.

W A Stevens announces a large, well chosen stock of dry goods offered at low prices in this county. Greeley is expected with his white coat and umbrella at the County Fair on Sept 25. Report on the fair grounds praises a prospering fair, new amphitheatre, improved cattle pens and horse stalls. Three bands Lena, Monroe and Freeport to perform during the tournament.
