Fair week at Freeport brings noise of fairs and industry

Fair week and fair weather headline Freeport civic buzz with Matilda Fletcher lectures at the Fair Grounds and broad civic improvements. Muscatine Melons Toasted by Local Grocers

Mr G. F. Grosley of Muscatine Iowa presented several 40 pound melons to local grocery dealers. The fruits were grown on his Muscatine Island farm noted for early vegetables and superior small fruits including grapes and sweet potatoes, shipped far beyond the region.

County Fair opens with bustling shows and onstage talent

Monday’s opening day drew a busy crowds and a strong display of fair exhibits while promising many fine items for the rest of the event. Matilda Fletcher will speak Thursday as baseball games and overseas clubs contest for prizes. Edwin Browne’s dramatic company impressed attendees with Miss Josie Crocker and Mr. Browne delivering top performances.

Mrs. Strawbridge and her daughter Mrs. Shaffer with Willie and Mary Shaffer visit Mrs. Col. Mitchell before returning home from Kansas grasshoppers. Mrs. Barber of Rock Grove and Mrs. Snyder plus Miss Stearns completed a pleasant Pennsylvania trip. Frank Fry came back last Sunday after three weeks in Kansas. Tom Collings reportedly seen last week as five people searched for the supposed person.

Obituary of Daniel R Williams a Mystic native dies in city life

Daniel R Williams a longtime city resident died on Tenaday morning at 9 o'clock after a diabetes illness. Born January 26 1806 in Stonington Conn he was 68. He married the daughter of John F Appleman and had seven children. He began in Pensacola then Mystic where he made sieves and wire cloth, later California gold era ventures, then lumber in Werner Wisconsin before settling back in the city. His remains were moved to Mystic for interment with his wife and daughter Antoinette. The obituary notes his perseverance energy and success in enterprises and records a final rest after a life of deeds.

Gift Concert Postponed by Masonic Relief Association

The Grand Gift Concert for the Masonic Relief Association of Norfolk Va has been postponed from September 8 to November 19. Directors urge buyers to wait for a fixed drawing date, noting that ticket sales were insufficient for a fair prize distribution. The new date is Thursday November 10 for the second Grand Gift Concert and drawing. Board of Directors.
