A Chicago rally addressed by Senator Douglas drew fierce protest from local crowds. Amid tense scenes, a bodyguard and Irish flags visible, yet speakers faced jeers and questions on the Harbor and River Bill. The event ended with strong public sentiment against Douglas and calls for reform.
The Stephenson County Democracy convention nominated a ticket for the Legislature and sheriff, endorsed Nebraska and Douglas, attacked Know Nothings, and instructed delegates to Rockford. Speakers defended the Nebraska Bill, vilified Anti Nebraskans, adjourned amid cheers for Douglas and Republican outsiders, with calls for repudiation of the platform.
The Chicago Journal notes a large audience at a Douglas meeting applauding our Representative after an allusion by Douglas.
From all portions of the District we have the most hearing evidence of the hearty response which the action of the Republican Convention at Rockford is receiving. The movement meets with the most unqualified approval of a large majority of independent voters.
From Mexico through Charleston and Savannah reports detail insurrection anxieties under Alvarez with French officers condemned, Indian uprisings and starvation in several states, cholera fading yet yellow fever fears rising in Savannah and Charleston inclining hospitals. Ex senator Hager’s death noted. Democratic conventions seek new candidates.
Correspondence recalls St Paul’s rough beginnings at the Minnesota frontier a half dozen years ago, when the village with about twelve log buildings and fifty dollar lots began to grow. It praises rapid progress, the Pioneer newspaper rise, and forecasts St Paul as a great northern commercial depot with river and rail links, railroads, and a booming population led by industrious residents. The piece notes four daily and four weekly papers, expanding professions, and the city’s status as Ramsey County seat and territory capital.
The Whig and Mass Conventions at Elizabeth Jay Saturday nominated De War A. Litten for Representative, Th. Khown ey for Sheriff, and B. A. Tispen for Coroner after adopting Rockford Mass Convention rules. A Breeport letter fragment about a ten person family overeats spoiled pork is noted, with caution about its veracity.
A controversial Washington era sermon urges statesmen and ministers to act boldly against slavish powers. It links reverence for independence to repealing slave laws, expanding free territories, and passing a fugitive free law to protect freemen amid tensions over Nebraska and Kansas.
At Rockford on September 6 Whig delegates elected D H Whitney as chair and D H Whitney Boones to lead. Resolutions condemn executive encroachment and slavery, call for repeal of the Fugitive Slave Law and Kansas Nebraska bill, support Missouri Compromise, and urge liberal land laws and writ of habeas corpus. Acclaimed J R Daviens as the Whig candidate for Congress.

British Parliament prorogued. Spain to elect on Nov 8 with Riots in Tortoso and Barcelona. Napoleon absent over suspected conspiracy. Portugal denies fusion with Spain. Cholera subsiding at Genoa, deadly at Naples. cotton prices down slightly. Broadstalls steady. money consuls 933-934.
The Savannah papers report panic over yellow fever in Savannah and Charleston with citizens fleeing and plans to open a hospital if epidemic. Baltimore notes 148 deaths for the city last week 21 from dysentery and 6 from consumption. cholera none. Interments Friday 12 and Saturday 15, eight from fever.
