Early County Pioneers Forge Growth in Fruit and Industry
In 1836 two brothers founded a 160 acre farm and a 50,000 tree grafted nursery. L Montague planted the county’s first grafted fruit orchard from Indiana stock, later expanding to 2,000 trees. He introduced apples pears peaches plums grapes and chestnuts and earned county fair premiums. He also hosted the county’s first gospel sermon and formed the first Methodist class in 1836. He became the county’s first landowner with a 320 acre preemption. Early mills and industry followed with the first sawmill at Winslow site and the Cedarville grist mill built by Dr. Van Valzah.
