Washington Letter from 1878 on relief efforts and currency
Washington letter reports on relief work for yellow fever victims along the Mississippi led by the National Relief Association under Alex Shepherd, planning a charity steamer from St Louis with supplies, medicine, and clothing. It condemns unlimited fiat money, warns of the dangers of greenbacks, and notes political pressure from Democratic rifle clubs in the South. It recalls past currency crises and urges stable government bonds to protect savers and policyholders.

National banks taxed heavily says New York Times
The New York Times cites Comptroller of the Currency reports showing national banks paid $17.38 million in taxes in 1875 on capital of $503.7 million and $9.5 million in 1877 on $619.1 million. It argues banking remains open to all with profits driving growth and rebuts claims of a banking monopoly. The piece also notes a capital decline from 1875 to 1877 and dismisses anti bank demagoguery.

Labor, Capital, and the Flow of Wealth in Investment
The article argues that capitalists risk and often lose capital while funding enterprises and paying for labor, equipment, and upkeep. It notes that even when businesses fail, the wealth produced passes through many laborers, and the final consequence is that labor ultimately retains most wealth, with capitalists serving a societal role by preserving part of wealth that would otherwise be consumed.
