Big Horn Expedition Journal Notes Hard March to Independence Rock

A dated, first person account of Col. Anson Mills 34 Cavalry leading the Big Horn Expedition. The trek from a supply rendezvous on August 27 to the Powder River and Salt Creek route covers storms, scarce rations, and encounters with scouts, a buffalo kill, and a dead hill man. The march traces ridges of the Big Horn range to Old Fort Casper and finally toward Independence Rock with a relief supply party arriving to lift hunger.
