Nasty mob action targets Black settlement in Kentucky
An 1860s Kentucky scene recounts a white mob driving out Black residents from Garretstown near Abbott's grocery. The mob, led by Squire Gavitt and others, seized property, burned books, furniture, and clothing, and killed six Black men and women in retaliation while praising their own vigilante justice. The account frames it as righteous zeal by local Democrats against emancipation ugliness.
