French Napoleonic Views on Italy and Romeboard

Louis Napoleon writes Ney that France aims to regulate Italian liberty, not crush it, to replace the pontifical rule in power, and regrets the Pope's benevolent aims were unfruitful. Gen. Randon is named for the Italian command, with orders if the Pope fails to return to Rome. Garibaldi rests in Geneva awaiting departure. Rumors place Austria protecting the Pope, and news from Hungary is sparse. German states mostly accept a Prussia led alliance. Flour and grain prices drift as markets react. A St Louis fire destroys a mill and damages nearby property. Napoleon and officials influence on European affairs cited in ciphered dispatches.
