Yesterday morning workers unearthed a human skull three to four feet below the surface at Mr. Berrage’s brewery. Nearly the entire skeleton was found in a decomposed state, with arms legs ribs very short. Aged person’s skull and teeth indicate old age. Peculiar silver bands and shell work, with unknown inscriptions, were recovered, suggesting artful adornment once worn. The shell plate, turtle-shaped and white as chalk, measures about three by four inches, attached by rivets now rusted. The find raises questions about the skeleton’s identity and the origin of the ornaments.
Pittsburgh Telegraph reports Great Western Gun Works in the city has for six weeks been shipping muskets mainly to South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi.
