A garbled OCR tale gathers street slang and stray phrases about hops, marriage, champagne in a barrel, a Georgia wedding, conundrums, and a Sunday school joke. It mentions T. Winkle and a Wisconsin girl, with stray lines about a deserter punished by ear removal and a rogue’s march.
The article argues that prejudice has long hindered labor saving devices from steam power to the sewing machine. It cites widespread resistance to the jacquard loom saw-mills knives forks and carriages, noting mobs and disfavor delayed adoption yet progress eventually spreads. The piece concludes that current comforts came only after such forcible acceptance.
A talesome 19th century column recounts Daniel Drew’s stock gambit with a New Jersey Methodist minister and a joke that spirals through trustees and brethren who buy stock on others’ misfortunes. Also features a humorous naming remark, Irish horse purchase, and a near-drowning misadventure from the Chickahominy.
A roundtable discussion features Herbert Our Next Door Mandeville and others critiquing leniency toward criminals, arguing punishment should be more individual and tied to reform. They consider jail release, gender roles in reform, and societal structures shaping crime and reformation.
