A collage of jokes and vignettes spans religion, politics, marriage, and everyday life. It features quips about old age, love, and divorce, alongside humorous anecdotes about Hood, Artemus Ward, and a Western switch-tender. The piece weaves satirical reflections on manners, brains, and foolish pride with brief diary-esque lines and a funeral tableau, all in a breezy 19th century tone.
The piece traces Franklin’s lightning rod invention and its test on a Philadelphia hill, then follows Morse from experiments to Congress funding for the telegraph. It notes the first message What hath God wrought from Washington to Baltimore on May 27 1844 and honors Morse as father of the telegraph.
A fragment from a biblical verse speaks of refuge in the Lord under his shadow and feathers. It mentions deliverance from snares pestilence and dangers by night and day. The text emphasizes trust in God as shield and fortress and ends with “thou shalt not be afraid.”
A writer argues that courage and endurance surpass mere safety and luck. The text contrasts absence of body with presence of mind, praising a soul that braves disaster over fortune that escapes it. It cites martyr Polycarp legends and asserts endurance as a higher gift than deliverance.
