In a rural Wisconsin scene Betty, four, wanders from her siblings during a berry gathering. The woods grow dark as she loses the trail, slips and falls, and the family fears for her as night falls and her father heads into the woods with neighbors to search.
In a dramatic rescue, Mr Brower and Pierre shoot a white bear to free Betty, who clung to a log above a Gulf Lake tributary after a long search with torches. Betty describes the bear’s help as the animal dragged her from water and then left her unharmed as her rescuers arrived.
A tale recalls Deacon Overreach and Hugo Zimmelman, a mean neighbor who seeks a cheap marriage by joking about paying in potatoes. Hugo visits Parson Rogers in Digby for a license, balks at six dollars, but decides to marry that night to save money. The story notes his shrewd, practical reasoning and skeptical view of fresh wives.
