A 19th century farmer and miller from Clifton Park Saratoga County New York, W L Potter, develops a process using ground slate mixed with coal tar to create a waterproof heat resistant roof coating. After patents in 1863, he tests the system for years, producing a rebuildable crust of slate that bears weight, resists heat and water, and could transform domestic roofing practices.
A temperance tavern sign faced a rude test when a party of riders demanded liquor. The leader threatened to cut the sign, but the young daughter played the piano and sang, winning the travelers over. Later a party spokesman apologized, praising the girl’s courage.
