Local Notices and Oddities Echo a Town Meeting Milieu
A verbose clipping reports taxes, dues, and notices from Rockford and Freeport communities. It mentions subscribers urged to pay, opera promotions starring Caroline Richings and Bernard, local officers elected for Davis Manufacturing, Justices of the Peace listed for Freeport, a small theft case with a $5 fine, and the sudden death of Western Union official Mr. Franklin. Also noted are burglaries, postage, and a general portrait of late nineteenth century civic life with garbled OCR phrases.
Personal notes and social updates from the city
The column reports meetings and visits including Mr B A Ewing of Decath visiting the city, Miss Flora Quitewu returning from four months in Missouri and Iowa, clergy attendance by Rev R T Sweet and Rev J A Read, and various locals traveling to Chicago and Kansas. It mentions millinery buyers Wilson and Co and Krinbill planning spring stock, plus a Northwestern Deanery program at Zion Church. A jail visit reveals burglar Polly La Fontaine, with police appeals and an arrest of John Miller for a fall barber shop burglary. A butter trick in Ruston’s window is noted, a First Presbyterian social to aid whorehouse partners is announced, and the Caroline Richards-Remnard Bugle Company performs at Sheppard House. A found fur token is claimed, and a reward is offered for escaped burglars.

A second burglary at Gilbert Smith's Union Street home yielded small sums and Flora Smith's cherished locket. Fitch survived multiple gunshot wounds and the captured man, Thomas Juуons, is in jail awaiting trial. Neighbors pursued justice while the neighborhood stays on alert.
