Captain Marey of the Seventh Infantry, Fort Smith, will lead his company on an exploring expedition to the headwaters of the Red River. Ordered from Washington to ascertain resources of the region and to assure the local Indians of the United States humane intentions, while signaling the government's strength and readiness to punish frontier outrages in Texas and elsewhere.
