The Tonolulu Friend recounts Mauna Loa eruption details with a 1,000 foot fiery fountain and a river of fire 85 miles long. The scene illuminated Eastern Hawaii at night, with 10,000 feet vent height, explosions, and a radiant column seen 200 miles at sea.
The Fenian movement shows signs of collapse as expectations fade. O Mahony remains at Union Square while large fund receipts and warlike preparations have dwindled. Confidence in the movement erodes as mass meetings fade and planned campaigns in Canada Ireland Bermuda Australia India and Africa fail to materialize. Public authorities focus on maintaining order and supervision.
A young Secesh heiress vowed to marry Major in rebel service after the war or join a convent, but fate altered her zeal. After Fort Wagner and Charleston, she survived and met a Yankee colonel. In four weeks she married him, against family pleas, and they reside in Europe. Charleston Letter.
The Judiciary Committee examined Dr Jas Meredith of Indianapolis who testified he attended a Montreal meeting in February 1865 with Saunders Thompson Tucker and others discussing the Lincoln assassination. It was claimed Booth would act soon and a letter from Jeff Davis was read. Meredith said Clement C Clay later told him he knew all about it. He traveled from Newport Kentucky to Canada in 1864.
