The Freeport Journal reports the jury is still considering its verdict with nine votes for Beecher and three for Tilton, as our edition goes to press.
A tornado last Sunday evening devastated part of Detroit Michigan demolishing eighteen houses. Chas Peike was fatally injured along with his four year old child. Mrs Jed Rademacker and Mrs Lizzie Perkins sustained fatal injuries or critical condition. Richard Bates, ten, was blown into an elm and died. Nearly 100 people were bruised and treated by doctors with more possible fatalities feared.
Mr Raphael Semmes once commanded the Alabama declined to attend the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. He demanded repeal of the Fourteenth Amendment by a three fourths vote and the amendment sealed with black lines, a symbol of protest against its origins. The notice notes his withdrawal may spur Centennial Commissioners to renewed zeal.
