Pontiac Reform School Building Ready for Occupancy
Gov Palmer announces via proclamation that the Pontiac Reform School building is completed and ready for occupancy. The main structure is 180 by 67 feet with wings, brick and stone trim, slate and zinc roofing, and extensive facilities including workshops, dormitories, chapel, and a kitchen. A second building houses engine rooms, laundry, hospital, and sewing rooms. Total site and construction costs exceed 170000 dollars. The institution is designed for youths under eighteen committed by courts, offering schooling, mechanical training, and reform-focused care, with tickets of leave possible once reformation occurs. Superintendent W Perkins, formerly of Chicago reform schools, leads the effort.
