Gen Pierce and the Right of Petition in 1836 37

In the New York Evening Post account, Gen Franklin Pierce and John Quincy Adams clash over the Right of Petition on slavery in the District of Columbia. Adams votes against petitions, Pierce votes for them. The piece traces party lines and notes later political implications for 1848 and 1852.

Illinois Legislature June 164h Senate and House Pass Bills

In the Senate bills were passed enlarging court times in the 6th circuit and creating a state road. establishing and incorporating hospitals for sick and disabled boatmen. and incorporating the Chicago Fireman's Insurance Company. A homestead exemption bill was debated. repeal failed amid votes on amendments and submitting the law to voters. In the House, the nine district congressional plan passed with detailed district lists including Lake McHenry Boone Winnebago Stephenson Jo Daviess Carroll Oxley and others across nine districts.

Nominations and Whig Rally in Freeport

On the fifty third ballot Winfield Scott was nominated at the National Convention. The Freeport Whigs ratified the nomination and praised Scott and Graham, pledged unity, and outlined campaign committees and resolutions supporting Whig principles, protection for labor, and opposition to slavery expansion. A large Freeport meeting elected officers and urged publication of proceedings.

Nominating Nerve Roars Through Warren Whig Meeting

The West rings with joy as Gen Winfield Scott is hailed as standard bearer with loud acclamations at Warren Jo Daviess County amid heavy crowds. A Tuesday ratification meeting at the court house drew a packed audience and cheers for Scott and Graham. A military meeting is set for Saturday the 26th at 4 PM to organize a new company while Wrights Hall guests at the Lapis Faun enjoyed a lively evening with over $100 in receipts.
