Florence, May 29, 8,7. A writer observes a robin pair arguing over home placement. Mr Robin speaks, seeks his right to establish a nest in a chosen place while Mrs Robin asserts her voice in housekeeping. After a quarrel he yields. work begins and balance is proposed.
A Swedish legend tells how a priest and monks encounter a mermaid on river waters. His music draws the merman, the staff of the prelate blossoms in remorse. The tale ends with a prayer for love and charity as sacred music fills the chapel.
A narrator follows a ragged stray dog with a basket through dreary London streets. The dog's devotion leads to a tense meeting with a starving miser, revealing poverty, generosity from neighbors, and a sad tale of survival and loyalty ending in the dog’s death beside his master’s grave.
