Our Forgotten Heroes Honor Soldiers Graves in Freeport
On Friday in Freeport the graves of Union soldiers were garlanded with evergreens and flowers. Residents gathered at Commercial Block then marched to the cemetery led by the Freeport Guards and Young American Band to decorate crosses and wreaths. A large evergreen cross near the entrance memorialized unknown dead, while many others buried across distant battlefields are honored in memory. The procession returned for prayers and a brief address by Rev. William Augustus Smith, affirming the nation’s duty to its fallen soldiers.
