Freeport council met in regular session with Mayor presiding. Due to lack of quorum they adjourned to June 7 1881. June 7 meeting approved May and April reports, opened street and license petitions, funded alley and street work, and handled fire department and cemetery matters. Resignations of fire marshal and assistants accepted and new appointments made, budgets reviewed, and adjourned to June 13 1881.
City Council held a special meeting June 16 1881 to review sidewalk ordinances numbers 1 through 15 and discuss improvements for the City Cemetery. Mayor presided. Aldermen Hartman Waddell Porter and Wagner attended. committee on public grounds and City Surveyor directed to proceed with recommendations.
A column urges stopping costly doctors and humbug cures and embracing nature’s simple remedies. It promotes Hop Bitters as the greatest remedy and advises readers to see another column for details, framing the message as wise and cost saving.
A vintage advertisement touts Burdock Blood Bitters as the superior blood cleanser and tonic. It cites benefits for indigestion constipation bowels and nerves with a one dollar price and a ten cent trial. A humorous line about a fly in tea ends with a five cent extra charge note.
