A Vision of Presidential Trip and Democratic Duty
An excerpted, dialect rich recounting of a presidential visit to Boston and Washington style reflections. The narrator describes the President’s reception in Franklin Street and a scene with gifts and kisses, then narrates a dream where Northern Democrats debate strategy, imagining a giant figure representing party strength, weakened by internal divisions and policy clashes. Names and places include Boston, Franklin Street, and Kentucky, with political figures implied in a satirical Bulwer-Lytton tone.

Southerners carry the dead weight of a political dream
The narrative depicts Vallandigham and allies collapsing under a suffocating burden as Northern Democrats fail to rally support. It recounts a bleak scene of lifeless casualties, dead weights, and failed hopes, ending with a sensational jab about Postmaster Nasby and a mock academy project.

Aerial Wedding Excursion At Union Park
The Saturday event at Union Park featured an aerial wedding and bridal excursion with over a thousand spectators. Miss Maggie Farnshell of Wester OH and Mr. W J Smith Jr of Philadelphia married in the balloon ascent led by Alderman Strain before rising to a height of several hundred feet and drifting southeast over Allegheny and Pittsburgh, landing near McKeesport after about twenty miles. Thousands watched from streets and windows as the balloon ascended with the newlyweds, the aeronaut Professor Thurston assisting after landing.
