Supervisors Open July 1877 Proceedings in Stephenson County
The July 6 1877 session of the Stephenson County Board of Supervisors met at Freeport with W Ill Cox presiding. In a second hand book stall we found school readers altered by the Irish Council of Education to remove phrases deemed inappropriate. The Deserted Village line is changed from whispering towers to talking age and social converse, provoking Wesleyan-style indignation at supposed blunders.

The Poppy and the Bee Fable of Vanity and Hunger
A hungry wild bee enters a garden and asks a poppy for pollen but is rebuffed by the vain flower. The gardener oversees the scene and ends by uprooting the poppy, while the bee moves on to mignonette nectar. Vanity is a strong drink, the tale concludes.
