An Independence Day address by M R Chambers celebrates national unity, liberty, and the progress of the United States through revolution, war, and Reconstruction while urging adherence to the principle that government is by and for the people. Hon D H Sunderland adds context on slavery, slavery’s abolition, and the nation’s westward growth and achievements. A local note mentions Miss Levenia Victoria Smith painting a panel despite pneumonia complications among her sisters.
