The issue reports the Free Methodist Church dedication by Rev. W. W. Kelly, mentions Forreston Principal Prof. J. Lawson Wright visiting the city, and notes the Illinois court and school activity while listing many residents and local happenings.
The long walking contest finished Saturday night with O Leary leading by 25 miles after 21 o clock. A large crowd gathered at Kabley and Weaver’s to hear music and enjoy Joe’s cream while other city notices urged excursions and encampment plans.
At Temperance Hall the Freeport Division No 66 Sons of Temperance elected officers for the coming quarter. The vote included W Hart, Miss Emma Huntman, Miss Etta Bordner, Rev G Young, and others. A W R R timetable lists July 4 to July 6 1879 with multiple trains to and from Freeport and intermediate stops.
A life size Strasburg Clock model was set up yesterday afternoon in a store beside 1st National Bank on Stephenson street. The tall frame reaches from floor to ceiling and draws visitors as a fine exhibit. An on site explanation was given and the display will run the rest of the week. A dime to see it is suggested.
Henry K. Brubaker appointed guardian of Benj Lapp Jr with bond $250. Final report of administrator for Jno Neal estate approved and recorded, estate insolvent and settled as to administrator, administrator discharged. Estate of Samuel Templeton deceased. inventory ordered filed. Estate of Daniel Mack deceased. appraisal approved and recorded. Report of Z Stover guardian for Sieckel heirs approved and recorded. guardianship settled.
Miss Lillie Harmon, eldest daughter of a widowed mother in Woodbine, killed herself with poison last Wednesday after saying a trusted man betrayed her and deserted her, leaving her to bear sorrow and disgrace. A Warren resident reported the incident. the piece ends with a moral question on punishing the betrayer.
On June 26 Miss Fonetta Pansbury and Miss Ada Greenleaf rode out for a pleasure drive to West Point. A frightened horse threw their buggy, injuring Greenleaf, bruising Flansburg who lost consciousness until aid arrived at Dr. Darlings office. She recovered with wounds dressed and was sent home. initial reports of facial disfigurement were false.
The Kendall Kombination arrives tomorrow and starts its season July 3 with Mark Twain's Col Mulberry Sellers. The troupe, praised as having a complete orchestra brass band and scenery, plans to stay through mid August. Tickets 50 cents, sales at Sanborn's. Pinafore matinee Saturday for ladies and children at 26 and 16 cents.
The Baptist Church held a full day of services to dedicate its new house of worship. Rev. Dr. Cooley spoke in the morning and evening, with Gabriel Anderson of the University of Chicago delivering the sermon on the church as the pillar and ground of the truth. Subscriptions totaled 1411 in the morning and 2032 by evening.
A four year effort culminated in the dedication of the Freeport Baptist church building. Rev. Phillips Rev. Gilbert and others attended. Anderson led a prayer, the choir sang doxology, and Prot Throp gave a benediction. Architect S. M. Ray of Chicago and builders JY Brothers of this city were praised for their work.
