The speaker prays for divine forgiveness and guidance to align will with God. He asks for a heart filled with love, freedom from complaint, and transformation through sorrow. The verse closes with a plea to be washed clean and refined like wool, reflecting spiritual renewal.
In a frontier tale, William Harden longs to join the fight for liberty as his mother, a widow, watches with pride and fear. Abigail More, torn by loyalty to Harden and to her father, overhears a Loyalist plot to seize him with powder and capture in a tense skirmish setup.
In a midnight meeting Harden, son of Charles Harden, urges Colonel Allen to seize British powder stored by Jason More. Harden disguises to help, while Captain Brown and officers plan a nighttime assault. Harden volunteers as a scout, prepared to blend as a Yankee peddler to gather intel.
Correspondent reports the December 1876 Christmas program at the Illinois State Asylum for Feeble Minded Children in Jacksonville. The crowd filled the reception hall and gym as pupils, many hearing impaired or with limited articulation, performed songs, declamations, and tableaux amid a rich display of gifts from Chicago donors. The event showcased the children’s progress, with praise for staff and students and notes on future observances at the Lincoln campus.
