Literary Institute Met in Concert Hall With Noted Speakers
The Literary Institute held its first meeting at Concert Hall last evening with wide attendance. Mr Turner spoke on the aims of the institute. Col Clark urged citizen support and signing the constitution. Members were invited to join as the meeting adjourned to Friday the 27th for a talk by Ad. Warner. Citizens praised the venture and hoped it would reform county character. The Washburns were thanked for public documents. A vocal band performed at the Baptist Church with the audience pleased and urged to attend future shows.

Poking rebels hold nearby areas but have not seized distant positions. The Sword Society insurgents captured Sianghai after street fighting, then were repelled by Imperialists. The hybrid dynastic government is declared prostrate by recent military actions. The siege reports show Imperialists bombarding the city while insurgents maintain positions. Foreigners were treated well by besiegers and a cautious calm exists amid destruction outside the walls.
