Death of Gen Halleck in Kentucky After Suffering Liver Disease
General Halleck died at eight o clock Saturday evening in Louisville Kentucky from congestion of the liver caused by long illness. Born in Onida County New York in 1819 he rose from modest origins to become a prominent engineer scholar and statesman. He served as a captain and later major general in the Union Army guiding operations in Missouri Arkansas and the West and earned a reputation for strict discipline and rapid reforms.
