Temperance Convention Opens in Freeport with Stirring Speeches
The 1877 Illinois temperance convention convened in Freeport led by Rev J Giffen and presided by J T McClanahan. Delegates from Joliet Florence Sterling and Rockford reported on club growth and the pledge drive, with Francis Murphy’s Pittsburgh blessing telegraphed to excite the crowd.
