Colfax Declines Presidential Run Upholds Grant Nomination
In a dispatch from Indianapolis dated 1872, Schuyler Colfax states he is not a candidate for the presidency and would support Grant’s renomination. He urges harmony within the Republican party, asks that his name not be used against Grant at the Indiana State Convention, and asserts his intent to back the party’s chosen leader. The letter carries his cordial relations with President Grant and his hope for a unanimous convention endorsement on the 22nd.
